Moderni/Paolo Vallorz

Paolo Vallorz was born in 1931 in Caldès, Val di Sole. In 1948 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. The following year he moved to Paris where he studied at the Accademia Libera della Grande Chaumière du Montparnasse. In these years he frequented Alberto Burri, César, Yves Klein, Giacometti and Pierre Restany. The production of that period takes on an abstract character, characterized by geometric works, then informal. During his mature years, he personally bought back those works in order to destroy them, as he could no longer identify with what he had done. He then resumed painting, favouring landscapes, especially those of his native valley. In 1993 he donated a large number of works to the Mart of Rovereto, belonging to three thematic series, each of which corresponds to one of his favorite subjects of the last twenty years of the twentieth century: landscape, still life and portrait. The Mart has dedicated two personal exhibitions to him: Paolo Vallorz. Nature as a History of Man, in 2005, and The Donation Paolo Vallorz in 2011. In 1995, Jean Clair, director of the Picasso Museum in Paris and a great admirer of it, invited him to exhibit his work in the very important exhibition Identity and Otherness, which celebrated the centenary of the Venice Biennale. Vallorz spends his last time between Paris and Caldes, painting the landscapes he loves so much (2017).
