Andrea Facco do not belong to that generation of post-conceptual artists which produces lazy imitations of an already dead painting. Often, his works are demonstrations of something whose medial reality is not easy to recognize and understand. He is interested in letting the observer inside the painting, in a comparison between micro and macro-structures; he is interested in the interweaving of different levels of reproduction: on the one hand the painted reality crosses with visual, painted and photographic worlds, which we can find the reality; on the other hand he dissects the surface of the painting challenging our abilities of perception up to transform our eye in a precision microscope. In this way he invites us to overthink our perceptive habits. The coloured material in the most authentic ontological meaning and the leftovers remaining in the studio, are for him, and for us, experiences connected not only to the senses but also objects linked to the thoughts, to the extent that recall the process of realization of the painting.

Facco is not far from Paolini for the interest in the construction of the image, even if his it is definitely more sensual and 'materialistic'. As for Paolini, the studio and the tools are for Facco objects of thought, starting points for a reflection on art. Nevertheless, Facco's subtle intellectual game focuses on different artists, compared to the ones Paolini refers to. Facco is strongly connected to modernity: thanks to the 'fake' Morandi made with colours residue, the famous chair, Picasso's painting tools, colour traces left on the floor by Jackson Pollock and, last but not least, Van Gogh's self-portrait, who himself has recently redid. Reality is always perceived, in this we can recognize the relevance of the work he has produced so far. The illusionist strategies are unveiled by an exercise that sharpens our senses. The painter Andrea Facco always introduces us to something that challenges our perceptive abilities. At the same time he make us reflect on perceptive habits and on nowadays role of painting.

Biography

(Verona, 1973)

After attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and graduating with Concetto Pozzati in 2000, he was invited in 2005 by Peter Weiermair, the then Director of G.A.M. (Galleria d’Arte Maggiore) in Bologna, to participate in the exhibition Bologna Contemporanea, an exhibition about the last thirty years of painting in Bologna, as he is considered one of the most promising young painters on the international scene. In the same year he exhibited Room with a View in New York at the Grey Art Gallery - New York University Museum, the following year Escodentro at the Galleria Biagiotti Progetto Arte in Florence; in 2008 Le cose che pensano, in the same gallery, and as the crowning achievement of a long stay in China in the district of Chaoyang, he inaugurated the exhibition Waiting for Beijing, curated by Luca Beatrice, at the Galleria Box Art in Verona. His work focuses on Painting as an object to analyse: the subject is not only the image represented but also the mode of representation. Dexterously manoeuvring around the images that surround us daily, he creates heterogeneous works adopting and adapting the medium of painting according to his intellectual intentions. Among his most recent solo exhibitions we should mention: Il Doppio del Gioco, curated by Peter Weiermair, Galleria Goethe, Bolzano (2013); Lo strano caso di Joan Mitchell, curated by Alberto Zanchetta, Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, Lissone (MB) (2014) and Ignoto, curated by Daniela Ferrari, Galleria Alessandro Casciaro and Centro Culturale Trevi, Bolzano (2015). He has exhibited in Prague (Czech Republic), Kiel (Germany), Graz (Austria), Beijing (China), Singapore, Hanoi (Vietnam), Seoul (Korea), Tokyo (Japan), New Delhi (India), Porto Alegre (Brazil), and in Italy at the Luigi Pecci Centre for Contemporary Art in Prato, at the MACRO in Rome, at the Fondazione Stelline in Milan, at the Museo della Permanente in Milan, at the MART in Rovereto, at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice and at the OTTO Gallery in Bologna. His works are collected by the VAF Foundation of Frankfurt (Germany). In 2018 he was awarded the Aldo Tavella International Prize. In 2019 he was present at the MART in Rovereto in the exhibition Passion, 12 Italian Art Projects, in the section “MATERIA”, with his work The floor of J. Pollock’s studio.
